Bridlington Beaches
Bridlington has some of England's finest beaches, including our own South Shore beach, proudly flying the Resort Seaside Award flag (this means South Shore beach has passed stringent tests for water quality, cleanliness, safety and the highest standards of beach management). This traditional beach even has donkeys for the little ones to ride!

The North beach is a clean sweep of quality sand, backed by low cliffs planted up by the Council to look fantastic. The cliffs gradually rise to a great height as they become part of Flamborough Head, and the beach becomes wild and rocky, with rock pools for children to poke about in.

Bridlington Harbour
Bridlington's historic harbour is the centrepiece of the bustling seafront. Still a busy fishing port, Bridlington's fishermen bring in their daily catch to sell fresh. The moorings are shared with private yachts, pleasure cruisers and sailing boats, all of which add to the charm of the harbour.

There's plenty of fun to be had in Bridlington Bay too. Set sail on a pirate ship, or fasten your seatbelts for thrilling speedboat rides across the bay. Try sea fishing at the harbour, join a real North Sea fishing expedition, or take a cruise along the Yorkshire Heritage Coast.

You can visit the Priory Gatehouse, formerly a prison and now the Bayle Museum. In the market place you can still see the original stocks!

Markets and car boot sales
Thursdays offer a huge car boot sale and market at Strawberry Fields,
back out on the main A165 road toward Bridlington. Further afield at Skirlington there is an even bigger Sunday market and car boot sale.

Flamborough Head
Flamborough Head is one of Britain's most spectacular areas of chalk cliffs, standing 400 feet high, with coves, caves and sea stacks. As a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), there are 189 habitat types and 788 species, and the cliff top walk is a birdspotter's paradise.

There are two lightouses at Flamborough: a white octagonal tower dating from 1674 (possibly the oldest surviving lighthouse in England?) and a second lighthouse built in 1806. Trinity House operates tours of the lighthouse seasonally. There are toilets and a café here, making it a nice stopping point if you're walking round the headland.

Flamborough HeadPuffins at Bempton Cliffs

Bempton Cliffs
A family favourite, and easily the best place in England for seabirds. More than 200,000 birds (April to August) make the cliffs seem alive, and beginners can easily learn the difference between guillemots, gannets, razorbills, kittiwakes and fulmars, and the puffins (April to July) are always a delight for everybody.

The RSPB visitor centre opens from March to October, 9.30am to 5pm. The centre runs a programme of family events throughout the year, and Backpack Activity days are very popular. Even though it's a cliff-top location, good fencing makes the site safe for supervised children.

Dogs are welcome here, but they must be kept on a lead at all times.

Excursions further afield
Visitors to Bridlington may like to take day trips to explore the region, perhaps along the coast to Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Hornsea, Robin Hood's Bay or Cayton Bay, inland to the ancient city of York or up into the North York Moors National Park. This is a beautiful part of the world for you to enjoy from your South Shore base.

After a day out, it's nice to get back to the chalet and South Shore, where the beach is the best, with sand dunes for the kids to explore and the remains of WW2 bunkers to investigate!

Most people never discover how it feels to be on a beach in winter: being at the seaside out of season somehow takes one back to nature.
Dogs are allowed on this part of the beach all year round.

Have a great holiday and give me a ring if you find any problems,
or even if you've had a really lovely time at Bridlington South Shore!
